2024 Sustainable Growth Contest Winner: Pacific Salmon Foundation

Pacific Salmon Foundation: Leading the Way in Wild Salmon Conservation

We’re thrilled to announce the Pacific Salmon Foundation (PSF) as the 2024 Sustainable Growth Contest winner! Since 1987, PSF has spearheaded efforts to conserve, restore, and enhance wild Pacific salmon populations, which are vital to the ecosystems, economies, and cultures of British Columbia. With an impact spanning over 35 years, the Pacific Salmon Foundation is a deserving organization with ambitious plans to further bolster its support for the BC salmon population.

A Keystone Species with a Far-Reaching Impact

Salmon are more than just fish; they’re the backbone of British Columbia’s natural world, supporting over 130 species, from orcas and bears to eagles. Their influence extends beyond water, even nourishing forest ecosystems. For instance, salmon are responsible for up to 50% of the nitrogen found in trees along spawning streams, a critical component in ecosystem health. PSF’s work ensures that this lifeline remains intact, benefiting communities, ecosystems, and species for generations.

How PSF Addresses the UN SDGs

SDG #14 – Life Below Water

PSF is dedicated to protecting and restoring wild Pacific salmon, a critical species for aquatic ecosystems. Through its Salmon Watersheds Program, it works on habitat restoration and sustainable fishing practices, supporting over 160 community-led projects in 2023 alone. These efforts ensure the long-term health and resilience of salmon populations.

SDG #13 – Climate Action

Climate change is one of the greatest threats to salmon survival. PSF’s Climate Emergency Fund responds to immediate threats such as droughts, wildfires, and warming waters, while their Climate Adaptation Program focuses on long-term solutions. This includes creating drought-resistant habitats and addressing the impacts of extreme weather events on critical spawning grounds.

SDG #15 – Life on Land

PSF’s work isn’t just limited to water; their restoration projects extend to land-based ecosystems as well. Through reforestation efforts along streams and rivers, they’ve restored kilometres of riparian habitat. These efforts not only benefit salmon but also create healthier ecosystems for wildlife on land, supporting biodiversity and natural resilience.

How This Prize Will Support PSF

PSF’s forward-thinking approach to digital engagement makes them an ideal fit for the Sustainable Growth Contest. With the custom digital marketing package, PSF will amplify its online presence, attract new supporters, and solidify its position as a leader in conservation efforts. This digital boost is essential as they advance their new five-year strategic framework, which prioritizes salmon recovery and resilience in the face of climate change.

Winning this contest allows PSF to engage communities further, elevate their profile, and secure the partnerships necessary to scale their impact. Their commitment to salmon conservation is not just about protecting one species—it’s about sustaining entire ecosystems, supporting Indigenous cultures, and ensuring future generations inherit a healthier planet.

Looking Ahead

With this win, PSF is poised to expand its influence even further, leading the charge in addressing climate change’s impact on salmon populations. Their work fosters not only environmental sustainability but also cultural and economic resilience in British Columbia.
