The AirDrops contained enigmatic messages that stirred up curiosity in the recipients, which were sent from “Sleepy Hollow Cemetary,” a fictional setting in the film. The goal was to confuse people, as Netflix had set up paid Google keywords to redirect users to a website containing further information regarding the film.

Before 2010, Old Spice held an image that its products were for “Grandpas’.” This was an obstacle to their vision of appealing to a younger audience comprised of men aged 18 to 36 years old. They were being outperformed by competitors viewed as more “hip,” such as Axe.

Market research revealed that women made 60% of body wash purchases, so Isiah Mustafas’ opening line was “Hey ladies.” Old Spice desired to enter a younger demographic, so they aired this campaign on the platform with a massive population of millennials; YouTube. The advert was an immediate success, with over 20 million views in just 3 days, establishing a fresh entrance into a new demographic.
